E11. Bottom Shelf Bourbon Tasting - Distilled

E11. Bottom Shelf Bourbon Tasting

We all know about top shelf bourbons. Those are the pricey bottles that you often see in the full-page ads in the whiskey magazines and at eye level in your local liquor store. But what about bottom-shelf bourbons – the cheap juice tucked away down by the floor that you don’t see unless you’re looking for them?

Are there any bottom-shelf bourbons worth sipping? In this episode, Brent, Brian and Chuck try a blind taste-test of seven whiskeys priced at under $30 to find out. And there sure were some surprises! The boys behind Distilled Bourbon Podcast encourage you to listen to our experience – and then to organize your own blind tasting so you can discover your own surprises!

How We Did It

Distilled Bourbon Podcast conducted a single-blind taste test. While the boys were at the microphones, Brian’s wife, Justina, poured a sample of bottom-shelf whiskey into three cairn glasses and brought them into the turret, where we record most of our podcasts. The only thing the boys knew was which number they were tasting. They nosed the glasses, tasted and discussed. Then Justina brought in the next three glasses.

How You Can Do It

Plan an evening with a few friends. Each friend or couple can bring a bottle or two of an inexpensive whiskey (you can decide your own price point: $30, $25, even $20 or less). Have someone pour samples where the tasters can’t see the bottles and number them. Invite the tasters to take notes; you can decide whether to discuss them among yourselves as you taste them. At the end, the server can reveal what sample No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and so on really were. And like the Distilled Bourbon Podcast boys; Be prepared to be surprised! Most importantly, please drink responsibly – and have a designated driver available.
